Haven't been able to get on the Net for a few days - long story. We've been flat out filming around the Island and have only just begun to get into some fishing. It's been blowing it's tits off for two weeks now and we were rained off and blown out today.
Here's a quick snap of our first Bone - 26 inches to the fork, so not a long fish, but man what a pig! I could hardly get a hand around this puppy. It went like a freight-rain with 3 massive runs, twice it took almost 150 meters of string. At about 5.5kg (12 lb) I thought it was a pretty good fish, until a slightly disappointed Itu informed me it was "just a baby"
We've been hearing stories of monster Bones for a couple of weeks now, fish of 9kg on fly and Bones approaching a massive 20kg being netted. Three times I've asked Itu what an average size Bonefish on Aitutaki would weigh - he keeps telling me 15kg (33lb), I'll keep asking...
We took a fin clipping from this fish, the sample will be sent over to the Bonefish and Tarpon Trust in the US for genetic testing. So far, nobody has been able to tell us for certain what species we have here - but one things is for sure, they breed 'em big on Aitutaki.
